Tandem is a domestic scene — It is dialogic — Sometimes it is adversarial — The homogeneity of its back and forth is punctuated by individual flights of lyrical accusation, slapstick blurted utterances, and maybe even moments of accord — Time is a cursor constantly in motion: musical events are fitted in, not placed — It is Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell spitting out lines for Howard Hawks’ stopwatch — affect is not so much absent as intermittent and unreliable.
